ABSTRACT (for scientists)

Title: An Antiviral, Botanical Remedy for Treating the Common Cold: A Double-Blind, Placebo Controlled Clinical Trial.

Objective: To test the effectiveness of an antiviral remedy, Coldbloc®, in the treatment of the common cold.

Design: Randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study. The study was modeled after Mossad's research at the Cleveland Clinic where they tested the efficacy of zinc lozenges for treating the common cold (Annals of Internal Medicine 125(2):81-88, 1996).

Subjects: Volunteers were recruited through an article published in the state's major newspaper about a researcher seeking volunteers for a study on the common cold <http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2001/May/03/il/il01a.html>. Subjects consisted of people between 18-64 years of age that had no recent history (previous five years) of bronchitis, sinusitis, allergy, or asthma. Qualification criteria included having a sore, scratchy or itchy throat starting within the last 24 hours and at least one other cold symptom. People with the flu (fever 100 ° F+ and muscle aches) were not allowed to participate in the study.

Intervention: Subjects in the Coldbloc® group (n=40) received dosages at their allotted times without interrupting sleep. The pattern was repeated in the control group without the Coldbloc® ingredients. Ingredients not disclosed due to non-disclosure agreements.

Main Outcome Measures: Subjective daily symptom scores were taken for the following symptoms: sore throat, scratchy throat, runny nose, stuffy/congested nose, sneezing, hoarseness, cough, headache, muscle aches, fatigues, and fever (oral temperature).

Results: The study testing the efficacy of Coldbloc® resulted in a significant difference (P < 0.003) between Coldbloc® and the control. The time to complete resolution of symptoms was significantly shorter in the Coldbloc® group (4.6 days) than in the control group (7.4 days) (Figures 1-3). The results were similar to Mossad's study where the difference in duration was 4.4 days versus 7.6 days between the zinc lozenges group and the control group respectively. <http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2001/Aug/01/il/il02a.html>
